THE STORY OF QUEEN SIMA

Queen Sima is thought to have been the ruler of the Kalingga Kingdom in Central Java, near where Semarang is today. It is said that Queen Sima was a very strong, but fair queen and that all her people were extremely honest.

The news of Queen Sima and of the honesty of her people of the Kalingga kingdom even reached as far as China. The Chinese emperor of the time was extremely curious and sent envoys to check out the story.

In front of the Chinese envoys, Queen Sima filled a clay pot with jewelry and gold and placed it in the middle of the town's main street where it stayed for three months untouched!

The Crown Prince bumbled along the street one day and accidentally kicked the pot and broke it into little pieces! Queen Sima punished the Crown Prince for this, but no one knows what the punishment was exactly because it was thought better that little children didn't know.

And the Chinese envoys went back home to China and reported to the emperor that the story of Queen Sima and the honesty of her people was indeed very true!

Nicky,
Do you mean you had heard the story told before or do you mean that you heard from the other kids in class?
Now, a little lesson in grammar. If you can still find the story, if you can still read it and it still exists somewhere, just say "is".
"It is a great story". Got it?

Corin, Why don't you tell us what you think of the story. Your English is certainly good enough to tell us clearly.
Phil

Big Jumboo said...

Sydney, Thanks for your comment. It's good isn't it?
But where I get them from is a secret!
Phil

Big Jumboo said...

Sherline, I agree, Queen Sima sounds like a wonderful queen.
You comment is very good.
Phil

Big Jumboo said...

Natalie,
Tell us what you think about the story. That's the important part.
Phil

Big Jumboo said...

Brian,
That's one of the interesting things about the story - nobody knows what the punishment is, and they never will. Why? Well, I guess queen Sima doesn't think little children should cry.
Phil

Big Jumboo said...

Peter, You're right. it is a beautiful story. can you see the difference in the why way I spell "beautiful" and the way you do?
Phil

Big Jumboo said...

I'm glad you liked the story Shannon. i think you'll be interested in next weeks story too.
Another story about Our Country.
Phil

Big Jumboo said...

William, You should say, "I never heard this story before."
That's the real English William.
Did you like it?
That's what you should tell us.
Next time, right?
Phil

Big Jumboo said...

Yeah Judith, It's all about honesty and trust.
It's good because it's simple, don't you think?
Phil

Big Jumboo said...

Claudia, It's a great little story isn't it?
What's strange though, is that not many people know about it.
That's a pity, don't you think?
Phil

Big Jumboo said...

Gaby, I can't tell you where I dig these stories up. It's a secret!!
Phil

Big Jumboo said...

Hubert!!!!
Excellent comment from you. of course it's impossible to believe!
That's what makes the story work.
Phil

Big Jumboo said...

Patric,
once again your comments are 100% spot on. great!
Phil

Big Jumboo said...

Megan,
I have to agree with you. It is an interesting story.
Oh yes, alittle grammar lesson for you. If we can still read the story in alibrary or on the Net, someplace, then we should use the simple present tense verb and not the past tense. So you should have said, "it's a good story." You shouldn't use "was."
Does that make sense?
Phil

Big Jumboo said...

Dennis, You really ought to check your use of "here", or "hear"
read your comment again for errors.
Perhaps you are a "bull in a china shop."
Phil

Big Jumboo said...

No,
Dennis I didn't make the story up. It is an old story, but unfortunately, not many people know about it.
But the good thing is now you do and so you ought to tell your parents, don't you think?
Phil

Big Jumboo said...

Martin,
It is a beautiful story isn't it? What do you think makes it a beautiful story?
Phil

Big Jumboo said...

Kenneth,
"Is" or "was" ....extremely HONEST?
which one and why?
have a guess.
Phil

Big Jumboo said...

No,this is my first reading of the Queen sima and it was a great story.

Nadia 3A

Big Jumboo said...

Angela,
You say it's weird. That's OK, but what we are interested in are your ideas. So why do you think it weird?
Can you tell us?
Phil

Big Jumboo said...

Wow Nadia!
I really think that this perhaps your best work of the year so far. To me it shows just how much you have grown up since last July when you started Year 3.

Why do I say that? Well, it's simple really. We just want to see students using English in a natural way and you've definitely done that!

I think you should have used the word "before" in that first sentence, so it would read, "I haven't read this story before POK . It is very nice AND I like it very much."

I don't want to tell you just yet where I got the story from. It's kind of a secret at this stage.

I'll put in another story at the weekend - another story about Indonesia I mean, and perhaps you'll enjoy that too and write another good comment like you've done this evening.

Well done (Tai bang le) Nadia.
See you tomorrow.

Big Jumboo said...

Mr. Phil why all the people are so honest? and why does the crown prince kick the pot?

Natania 3D

Big Jumboo said...

Natania,
Your English!!! Questions with why or which or what and others have to be followed by a verb like is , or are, or do, or was , or were and others. So, your question should be, "Why are all the people so honest?"
Well, that's the point of the story isn't? So often people are the opposite of honest (dishonest) and the story makes that clear. That's why the emperor sent envoys all the way from China - he simply couldn't believe it either, just like you.
