The Legend of Rona

Rona was a lazy one. She really was. Her husband spoiled her too.
"Get me some water, " she would cry.
"Cook me some kumara (ubi)."
"Aie, kare." she would say. "Yes, dear.
Rona got up one morning and said to her husband. "I feel like a big fish for dinner."
"I'll get you one, kare," he said. "I'll be as quick as I can.'
"Take all day if you like. I've got some sleep to catch up on," she said.
Rona sat on the beach watching her husband paddle his canoe out to sea. She rolled out a whariki and lay down in the warm sun. Pretty soon, she was fast asleep. She slept all day until the sun went down.
When she awoke, she felt very thirsty and she lifted her gourd to have a drink, but it was empty.
"Where's that husband of mine. I'm hungry and I need a drink of water." She called out to her husband, but there was no answer.
"Pai kare. I'll have to get the water myself."
Evening had fallen as she walked past a tree on her way to the creek.
Te Marama, the moon, sailed overhead, lighting her way. But suddenly, Te Marama went behind a cloud and Rona could not see where she was going. She tripped on a rock and fell over bumping her knee. She was extremely angry. She looked up at the sky and cried out to the moon.
"Pokokohua!" she screamed.
"You craggy head!"
Te Marama stopped immediately. he said, "Are you talking to me?"
"Yes, I am! Look at what you made me do!" screamed Rona.
How dare you call me such a disgusting name!" said Te Marama.
Then, without another word, the moon zoomed in towards the earth and caught hold of Rona. She quickly grabbed the branch of a nearby tree, but the moon was far too strong. The tree came out by its roots and Rona was pulled up to the sky.
When Rona's husband returned home with a fish that almost filled his waka (canoe), he could not find his wife. He looked inside their whare (hut). He went down by the creek and down to the beach. Then, he looked up at Te Marama.
There, he saw his wife looking down at him. "Come and see the big fish I caught for you!" he said.
But Rona could only look down sadly and she could say nothing.
To this day, when there is a full moon, you will see Rona. She stands on the moon's face with the gourd in her hand. She looks down still holding on to the ngaio tree.

This story is from New Zealand.
Write a comment, comparing this story and the others that you've read over the last three weeks. Tell us what you think.
Is there a moral in the story of Rona?
What language do Rona and her husband speak?

I think this story is the most wonderful story I have read on the blog so far! But, it also teaches us a moral. The moral is : Don't be lazy and don't ask people to do your dirty work for you. If you do that to the people who cares about you, who loves you or even to the people you don't know or don't really care about, you can have a bad ending! (Seriously, you can get hurt or get into big trouble.) And you would regret what you have done!

Big Jumboo said...

Shannon, What makes you say this one is the best?
Phil

Big Jumboo said...

Mmmmm, Angela, you're right about the moral of the story of course, but I'm bamboozled by what you mean by "I'm gonna feel sad...."
That part.
Phil

Big Jumboo said...

Judith, Are you sure you haven't got a joki hidden at home somewhere, because that's exactly the moral of the story?
Phil

I think the moral is to be independent. I really like this story.

I think the last three weeks story is better than this story. The moral is don't be lazy.Oh ya Mr.Phil,I still don't know what language do they speak.

Martin 3D

Big Jumboo said...

OK, Gaby, I'm not sure that "ice cream" joke was posted, but my guess is November or possibly December. You'll have to scroll.
I'm not sure how you upload onto the hand phone, but I guess it's not too tricky. Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with that make of HP, so I can't exactly tell you.

I'm glad you liked the story and the moral is pretty easy to guess. i think it's a good reminder of why we always have to appreciate the ones we love.
Phil

Big Jumboo said...

Martin, you already know how to speak their language - a little bit anyway.

I think all the stories are good actually.
Phil

Big Jumboo said...

Gaby,

Just say it like this..."I just want to wait and see what you say."

Now that's what you are trying to say.

Phil

I think this story is the best comparing the other stories. And I think the morals of this story are don't be lazy and be independent. I like this story Mr.Phil !!!

Sherline 3D

Big Jumboo said...

Hello, Ms. Phil! I think this one is the best one than the other 3 story N my suggestion because I choose this is because my feeling when I read this story is like unique with the other story. The moral of the story is don't be lazy or not you will get a bad replay. I didn't know yet what is the language of this story because I think this story didn't mention what is the language.

Clarissa 3D

Big Jumboo said...

Sherline,
Your comment is very good and I think there is something special about the story that we can all relate to - what to do about overcoming anger?

Just one point about your English structure if you change "comparing the" to "compared to..." your English will be perfect.
Actually, we use this a lot. That's why I mention it here to help you.
I agree with you about the moral of the story, but you should read some of the other explanations - some are extremely good.
Phil

Big Jumboo said...

OoooPpppSssss I want to change something. My suggestion because I choose this story is because when I read the story I feeling is like the story is more unique than the other story. Sorry I'm wrong just now.

Clarissa 3D

Big Jumboo said...

Clarissa,
You made it!
The language isn't too serious, but let me tell you - you use it almost every day! Yes!
The words are stuck on your classroom door!
It's interesting that you find the story unique and important. There's something wise in this story, don't you think?
Phil

Big Jumboo said...

I don't think you're wrong Clarissa - no, no, no no.
Your ideas are brilliant!
Phil

Big Jumboo said...

oh ya mr phil what language do they speak ???
plus i compared the story with the story from the last 3 weeks i seen that this story is different from the others because the story is from new Zealand and the other stories are from Indonesia and this story has other languages from new zealand and ............. uhh the story is a bit weird too mr phil .

Gaby 3A

p.s. have you seen my comment in acrostic poems there were 3 comments but know there are 4 hehe .........

Big Jumboo said...

I think the story means that you have to be independent.

Jason 3A

Big Jumboo said...

Weird, huh Gaby? Yes, old stories are often weird. have you ever thought why?
A long time ago there was no written language, no books and people learned by listening to stories told by the old people of their families or tribes.
The more dramatic( weird), the more impact and the more easily a moral could be remembered and learned. Cunning, huh?

Big Jumboo said...

Oh dear, I just made a big boo-boo! I forgot my name.
Phil

Big Jumboo said...

Yeah Jason, you have pretty much got the idea.

I do think you should interact more.

Tell what you think about the story, make comparisons. Say more!!!!

You could be brilliant at this.

Gaby,
I did see your comments on the acrostic poems. I did figure it was you. I thought it was someone in 3D.

I thing this story is fantastic!!!
I thing the moral are:"you have to do your work alone. You have to be INDEPENDENT or not you will get something that you don't rellize that will happen and it will be bad." If it a fantastic story I always use the word "Where do you get this story Mr.Phil?" and sometimes you would say "It's a secret!!" am I right? And Mr.Phil, I heard that you will retire am right? If you want to do that can I have your e-mail and you hand phone number please? because I still want to contact with you. Thank you Mr.Phil

The last three weeks was about poems, but they all have morals.

The moral is: you will face the consequences if you do bad things.

The language is English and Maori.
Winson 3D

Big Jumboo said...

So Winson,
Can you tell us what really was Rona's mistake?

2nd question - are these poems or stories that we are talking about?

Phil

Big Jumboo said...

Mr. Phil,
The story is a bit weird, why the story says "When Rona's husband went home with the fishes(or the other word instead of fishes) he could not find his husband".

And if she is lazy, why does she walk, lazy peoples sometimes did not walk, they just stay in bed

maybe the word that her husband use is Hawain.

And I don't like the story very much.

DENNIS 3D

Big Jumboo said...

Sydney,
I am glad that you like the story. Tell us what is special about this story?

I agree it's about being independent, but it's more than that. Ask yourself, what would happen if you treated your best friend like that?

Would she remain your best friend?
But Rona treated her husband like a servant, even worse than that.
Doesn't that make you go"MMMMMM" and shake your head?

Yes, Sydney I am retiring at the end of this semester (year), but I'm not disappearing.
I expect to work in Lippo Karawaci, so you'll be able to stay in touch and I'll be able to help when you need.
I'll be quite happy to give you my contact numbers in June, and I can tell you now where I got all these stories from. It's too easy! The Net!
I just rewrote the stories to make them sound a little bit more modern and perhaps easier to understand, but to keep the "magic", if you know what I mean.

Big Jumboo said...

EEEEEEEeeeeerrrrrrrrrrRRRRRRRR, De, De, DENnnnnISSSSS. I think you have to learn something tonight!

Men don't have husbands, OK?
Men have wives!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Husbands have wives!!!!!!!!!!!
Wives have husbands!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And the fish, it was HUGE. He bought home the biggest fish he could catch and it took him all day to find one big enough. Why? Oh, too easy! Because he loved his wife, Rona.

But did Rona appreciate her husband? You tell me Dennis. You tell me.

Now, one last question, a question that you should ask yourself - would you marry a woman like Rona?

Don't forget now, you would be the husband!

Phil

Big Jumboo said...

Rona's mistake is being lazy, being grumpy and being rude.
I talk about the story.
What I mean is both the story and poem have moral.
Winson 3D

Big Jumboo said...

I agree with you Tata, it is about independence, but it is also a bit more than independence.

If you read some of the other kids comments, perhaps you'll get the answer. A better answer.

This skill is called RESEARCHING"
You better get good at it because your whole life depends on this skill.
Trust me Tata.

Big Jumboo said...

Winson,
What poems are you talking about?
Otherwise I agree with you.

If you don't understand the story, let me help you.

Is Rona an angry person?
Is it good to be angry?
If someone loves you and cares for you, how should you treat them back?

Now, I think you know the answers to these questions from the story.

Send me another comment with your answers to these questions ASAP.

Phil

Big Jumboo said...

Shania,
You've got the basic idea behind the story.
If you want a better idea, ask yourself if you you like the character, Rona.
If not, then just say why.

Phil

Big Jumboo said...

Dennis, You're getting close now.
Phil

Big Jumboo said...

Oh, Shania, btw, you DO know what language they speak, because you can speak a little of it yourself

Figure it out.

Oh yes, Shania, more.

Even one of the kids comments tonight has used this language!!!
I'm not joking!

Phil

Big Jumboo said...

I think Rona is a lazy wife so her husband had to do the all the work that Rona gave. They spoke in New Zealand language. The moral of this story is that we have to do things by ourselves

Nathan 3A

Big Jumboo said...

This moral is :don,t be bossy do not tell people to do your dirty work and do not say bad things to other people I think Rona and her husbands language is New Zealand language.

By.Raphael 3A

Big Jumboo said...

Yes, Nathan.
I think you've done well here, but ask yourself, what's the relationship between the the two characters?

And yes, you're right about the language, too. I think you speak a little of this ,don't you?

How does this story compare to the other ones we've read?

Give me answer, Nathan. I'm waiting.

Phil

Big Jumboo said...

CORRECT RAFAEL!!!!!
What do you call this New Zealand language?

Can you speak it?
Oh yes, I've heard you speaking it often.

Is the moral ONLY about doing your own work?

MMMmmmmmmmMMMM!!!!

I don't really think so.

Tell me. I'm waiting.

Phil

Big Jumboo said...

I think the Queen Aji story is better. But this is OK.
and the moral is don't be lazy and spoiled like Rona, and her husband should not spoiled her too. The language they used is Maori. Because the story is from New Zealand.
Mr.Phil according to me the Queen Aji story and Rona story are both myth

KENNETH
3D

Big Jumboo said...

After I read the 3rd times, I think its about someone that really spoiled, not polite and only blamed the others for her own mistake.

Hubert 3 D

Big Jumboo said...

Kenneth,
Yes, both Queen Aji and Rona are myths, because they try to explain natural features.

Actually, there is a little more to the Rona story. The gourd which she holds is a symbol for the tides that come in and out daily, like her gourd is full and then empty. And that's her job now, to look after the tides.

You are right about about the language too. It's Maori and we speak it in class in our greetings.

The moral though I think goes a little deeper than work and helping yourself, because it's about an appreciated love. Rona is too arrogant and eventually love will leave arrogance, right?

Once again, your comments are tops.
Have you seen your photo yet?

Phil

Big Jumboo said...

the moral is to be patient and not making names to people. They speak New Zealend language. I don't really like the story but it 's a great story.

Darrell 3D

Big Jumboo said...

Hubert,
I think I can say that tonight you have learned something important, perhaps two important things.

One is you've learned to re-read something and we need to do this to check that we do really understand.

Perhaps, (I'm guessing here), you've also learned to slow down, because you know now that if you rush at something, you end up saying the same old thing, "I don't understand!"

But, how can that be when you are already clever enough? Yes?

Phil

Big Jumboo said...

I think the moral of this story is when you are lazy and grumpy, you will get a punishment and I think the language is New Zealand dialect.
I like the story, but I like the story of Jayabaya beter.

By Patric 3A

Big Jumboo said...

Darrell,

It's a legend and legends are so old and different, so it is difficult for us to like them all the time.

Yet, this story teaches, perhaps more than the others, which explain, but not teach.

What is your opinion about anger?
Should we just get angry any old time we like?

Or should we discipline our feelings of anger?

How should we do that?

What techniques could we use so that we don't "blow our stacks" all the time?
Is Rona just a an angry woman?
Or is she something else?

Yes, Rona is lazy and grumpy, but there is something more, something even more dangerous - a word that starts with "arr...."

Think also about her relationship with her husband. Is it good? is it balanced?

Ha! Now, the brain goes tok-tick and not just tick-tok!!!

Maori is not a dialect-(dialects are slight differences in one language), it's language and you can speak it a little.

Oh Brian, you beat me to it!
I thought I was faster than that!

You've got a reasonable grasp of the story, but it could be that little bit more accurate - the key word is "app.........................ate"

Work is OK, but this word is very important in this story.

Why am I leaving? Well, simply because I've reached retirement age. That simple. But it's not the end of the world. Oh, no, no.

I'll still keep and eye on you guys in my own way and I'll never be too far away.
