Well, we've been working on our simple sentences and compound sentences in class.
This week we'll see what you can do from home.
You will need a little help . Perhaps an atlas would be useful.
Here's your work - pick a city from the following list and write two different sentences. One sentence is should be simple and the other one should be compound.
Here's an example. "Wellington is in Oceania." This is a simple sentence because it has one subject and one thought.
If we want to make this sentence into a compound sentence we could talk about the country.
"Wellington is in Oceania, and it's the capital city of New Zealand."
This is a compound sentence because it has two thoughts or ideas.
If you find a city that is NOT a capital city, just change the joining (conjunction) word from "and to "but" and change the verb "is" to negative - "is not" or "isn't".
Here's an example. " Brisbane is in Oceania, but it is not the capital city of Australia."
Pick three different cities and write two sentences about each one. One sentence should be simple and the other should be compound.

Dennis, your sentences are good. Only one little mistake. German mean the people or the language, but Germany is the country. Lots of people make this mistake. I don't know why. So don't make the same mistake as them.

This is good, Peter. I do think the sentences where you say "is not the capital city..." would sound better if you say "but' rather than "and". That's my only advice.

Some things to look out for in the future:
1. Use resources when you are unsure. That's why I suggested that you use an atlas.
If you haven't got an atlas at home, you could have clicked on the link to "capital cities", but I don't think you did that. Am I right?
The next thing you could have done is to check out some of the other kids' work and my comments. This would have helped you a lot!
2. Check your spelling and punctuation - always!
3. Check your facts. Perhaps someone in the family might know.
4. Check your structure. This is where you show that you didn't really understand what we were doing on Monday. That's no big deal. Sometimes it takes a little more time.
6. Next time take your time and read everything that will help you understand better. Remember a student's main job is to be a very good reader. If you do that, you will be helping yourself a lot and there's no better learner than one who seeks to find out by himself or herself!

Now in two of your examples you haven't used any continents so you finish up saying something like China twice in one sentence which we wouldn't normally do.

HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF A BULL IN CHINA SHOP?
Well, a china shop is not a shop in china, but rather a shop that sells expensive porcelain dinner ware - high quality plates and bowls and stuff like that.
Imagine if a bull were locked up in the shop. Yes, of course, he's run everywhere and smash everything, because he'd be in such a big hurry to get out of the shop even though he could walk out the open door.
Now the message for many of Year 3 students is this. We can see that many of you are are in a big hurry to finish your work as fast as possible. And the result too often is DISASTER with work full of silly mistakes.
If you teach yourselves to work more carefully and check you work step by step - the spelling, the punctuation, capital letters, commas and full stops. If you check your structure with the examples and with other kids' work and then come back to the blog later, before you go to bed and read my comments. That's the whole idea.
Do this and automatically you'll become a much better student for life!
